Now in its 16th year, Mental Health Awareness Week which began today and runs up to 22nd May focuses on the theme ‘Relationships in the 21st Century’ - the forgotten foundation of good mental health. Perkins School For The Blind Launches BlindNewWorld, A Campaign Promoting Blind Inclusion In A Sighted World

Perkins School for the Blind has launched BlindNewWorld, a social change campaign aimed at helping the sighted population be more inclusive of people who are blind and make the world more accessible to them. The campaign was created by BrightMark Consulting and features two public service announcement mini films (PSAs) by award-winning commercial and film director Tom De Cerchio. There are approximately seven million blind Americans who frequently find themselves excluded from society both socially and professionally. Alan Henning Memorial Garden To Be Officially Opened

A permanent memorial to Alan Henning is set to be officially opened in his home town of Eccles. A circular garden at Eccles Recreation ground will be opened in a special ceremony on Tuesday 17 May at 6pm. The Ceremonial Mayor of Salford Councillor Peter Dobbs will open proceedings and thank everyone for taking their time to remember Alan. Salford’s New Cabinet Announced

City Mayor Paul Dennett has announced his new cabinet. It will see two strategic assistant mayors abolished and replaced with two brand new posts. Paula Boshell will take the position of Statutory Deputy Mayor and focus on internal council and city issues. Councillor John Merry will be the new Deputy Mayor with an outward focus towards devolution, the Greater Manchester Combined Authority and beyond. Proposals Sought To Help Improve Lives Of Disabled People

  Organisations are invited to apply for up to £150, 000 from the Disability Research on Independent Living and Learning programme which launched last autumn and expects to fund around 40 projects in the UK over the next four years.  DRILL opened this Monday 9 May for applications and will close on 27 July.   Disabled people will be at the forefront of designing projects (with academics and policy and practice experts), for the programme. Salford City Mayor Elected

Salford’s voters have elected a new City Mayor. Labour’s Paul Dennett secured 28,332 votes, beating second place Councillor Robin Garrido who stood for the Conservative party and received 14,484 votes. The mayoral election used the supplementary voting system, meaning voters had two choices. After the first choice votes were counted Labour candidate, Paul Dennett received 24,209 votes (49.56 per cent) and Conservative candidate Councillor Robin Garrido, received 11,810 votes (24.18 per cent); meaning they moved to a second round of voting as no candidate achieved an overall majority. The results of Salford’s local elections have been announced. The political makeup of the council remains the same - 51 Labour - 8 Conservative and 1 Independent. 50,256 votes were cast - 30% of the electorate turned out to vote. It’s never been safer to eat food in Salford. Latest hygiene ratings from Salford City Council show that 90.5 per cent of all food businesses in the city are receiving a rating of three or higher. Environmental health officers visit all 2,193 food businesses in the city and they are given a rating from zero to five, depending on the hygiene standards.
