This month marks the 57th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York which was a landmark moment in modern LGBTQ+ Rights movements. It is a time when people celebrate and reflect on the progress that has been made to help increase equality whilst recognising that discrimination and inequality still remain in modern society. There will be a number of events taking place across the world which usually take the form of marches, festivals, cultural activities, educational programmes and community outreach.
Cultural groups sometimes use the month to promote inclusion, diversity and workplace equality initiatives. In the UK, many of the largest Pride festivals take place during the summer months rather than in June itself.
Background
Police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City on 28th June 1969 and this is widely regarded as the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ Rights movement. There were a series of violent confrontations between the two groups which eventually led to the modern gay rights movement being born. During the period, the solicitation of homosexual relations was illegal in New York and other urban centres. There were many gay bars around where gay men and lesbians could socialise in relative safety from public harassment. However, these were subject to regular police harassment.
On that day, nine policemen entered the Stonewall Inn, arrested the employees for selling alcohol without a license, roughed up many of its patrons, cleared the bar, and—in accordance with a New York criminal statute that authorized the arrest of anyone not wearing at least three articles of gender-appropriate clothing—took several people into custody.
There were many people gathered outside the bar who didn’t retreat when they say what was happening. They began to show their displeasure and jeer and jostle the police. They also threw bottle and debris. There was a huge riot and the police barricade was repeatedly breached. The riots outside the Stonewall Inn waxed and waned for the next five days.
There have been a number of events and festivals planned around the country to help mark Pride. These include:
